CONTINUING GOD’S STORY

SERVING GOD AND HIS COMMUNITY
THE NEXT 125 YEARS

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  — Ephesians 2:10

A BRIEF HISTORY

Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church began on January 27, 1895, when a number of Dutch immigrants, who recently settled in the Whitinsville area, met to discuss the idea of starting a new church. Worship started in February, and the church was organized on October 20, 1896. The first Christian Reformed church building in New England was completed on Willow Street three years later. As the congregation continued to grow, a decision was made to build a new and larger church. Construction on nearby Pleasant Street began in July of 1929, the cornerstone was dedicated on October 27, and the building was completed in June of 1930.

To create more space for children, youth, outreach, fellowship, and caring ministries, an addition consisting of a fellowship hall, kitchen, classrooms, nursery, and an office suite was completed in October of 1996 — commemorating One Hundred Years of faithful mission and ministry!

The beautiful church built in 1929 with a sanctuary of soaring arches, the highly functional addition of 1996, as well as the recently refurbished foundation on the lower level are the spaces where together we glorify God through worship and ministry.

PROJECT SCOPE

To honor our past and prepare for our future, we want to be good stewards of the building we have been given and make it a welcoming and comfortable place for worship and ministry.

Phase 1: Building Restoration

An extensive envelope study has identified several critical needs to maintain the integrity of our 1929 and 1996 buildings — the exterior brick walls, stained-glass windows, and tower roofs need to be rebuilt or repaired. Outer protective glass will be installed on all the stained glass windows and the 1996 windows, and parking lot entrance doors need to be replaced.

Phase 2: Sanctuary Renovation*

To create a welcoming and comfortable worship environment, we seek to increase the chancel/platform surface area and make it handicap accessible; relocate, rebuild and expose the pipe organ; upgrade current audio, visual, and lighting systems; add climate control (A/C); replace the carpet and repaint; and add flexible seating (padded chairs).

* The Sanctuary Renovation can begin when funding for the Build Restoration has been fully donated or pledged.

OUR GOAL

Our primary goal is to achieve 100% participation in Living God’s Story here at Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church and beyond. Our secondary goal is to raise $4.2 million to improve the structure and capacity of our building for long-term vitality and to grow God’s Kingdom in the Blackstone Valley. As a stable presence in our location, we have a renewed vision of what must be done. We need a safe and well-constructed church building to carry out the ministries to which God is calling us.

To achieve this work, we ask that our congregation and community of friends — both past and current — please prayerfully consider making donations and multi-year pledges to support God’s Kingdom work here.

Building Restoration $3.2 M
Sanctuary Renovation $1.0 M
Total Funding Goal $4.2 M
